Railway department to operate 19 trains today

A total of 19 trains will be in operation today to facilitate people registered to commute, the Department of Railways said on Monday. “The decision was reached as more around 11,500 passengers had registered to commute via trains,” Superintendent of Railways, Dilantha Fernando said. Seven trains will operate along the mainline, while six will operate along the coastal railway line and four along the Kelani-weli railway line. One train each will operate along the Puttalam and Northen railway lines, Fernando further added. Fernando also said that only 10 trains operated last week as only 2,600 passenger requests were registered last week. More than 70,000 passengers commute via trains on a normal day, According to Fernando. Both private and SLTB buses have been deployed for those travelling for work, according to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
