COLOMBO (News1st): The prisons department has said that 228 prisoners were released on Thursday in keeping with the religious Vesak Festival. These inmates were above the age of 65 and had been imprisoned for minor offences, prisons commissioner general T.M.J.W Thennakoon said. Sri Lanka will witness muted celebrations of the otherwise colorful Vesak Festival, due to restrictions imposed to stem the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The festival is celebrated to mark the birth, enlightenment, and demise of Lord Buddha.
