New mechanism to distribute produce in the country

COLOMBO (News1st): The government on Tuesday introduced a mechanism to distribute produce through divisional secretariats, after economic centres were shut due to COVID - 19 concerns. According to the new system, sub-committees tasked with supplying essential services at each divisional secretariat should order goods from economic centres before 10 am daily. "However, the minimum limit to order vegetables or fruits should be 7000 kilograms," the Presidential Task Force on Essential Services said. These orders can be placed at the Dambulla, Tambuttegama, Nuwara Eliya, Keppetipola, and Embilipitiya Economic Centres, which have been closed down to curb the spread of COVID 19. The economic centres will confirm the possibility of supplying the required goods before 2 pm, and distribute them among divisional secretariats with the approval of the government, the task force said. The distribution of these orders among traders would be handled by the sub committees at divisional secretariats.
