A statement from the Police Headquarters said officials were compelled to discharge their weapons in a bid to control the situation. As per officials, the prisoners rioted due to the suspension of visitation rights to prevent the spread of Covid 19 into the prison populous.
Eight inmates were admitted to the Anuradhapura hospital following the incident, of which two succumbed to the injuries.
The remaining six inmates are currently receiving treatment.
Officers attached to the Anuradhapura Police and Police Special Task Force are currently deployed to maintain security at the prison.
