COLOMBO (News 1st):- Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Sajith Premadasa issued a statement from his residence regarding the current situation of the country. In his statement he says;
"It is sad to note that the leaders of this country haven't identified this as a serious issue yet. The leaders are gambling in politics. There is no shortage of drugs, face masks, and health supplies. The administrators have all of them. They dissolved Parliament, not by thinking about the people's lives, but by aiming to win a majority in Parliament. People should be alive to conduct an election. Therefore, parliament should be convened immediately. When Britain was bombed Prime Minister Churchhill convened Parliament and set-up a war cabinet. Why can't we reconvene Parliament? A party leader's meeting can be held. Arbitrary decisions will not assist the country. What we can see is that the stable has been shut after the horse has bolted away. I wish to show the people of this country that these are high-quality masks (Shows a face mask). When I raised this matter in Parliament on the 5th of February, plenty of masks could have been imported. But they didn't listen to this request."
He continued to say;
"A faction of the government were strolling around while ministers were cracking jokes. Some ministers said that such remarks should not be made as it could disrupt ties with China. As the Opposition, we are ready to lend our unconditional support. However, each household should be given an allowance of at least Rs. 65,000. The people are finding it difficult to make ends meet. All sectors are facing setbacks. That is the appeal I can make to the rulers of this country from my residence. I wish to invite all the people to unite and defeat this virus."
The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has decided to temporarily suspend all its political activities. Accordingly, the head office of the Samagi Jana Balawegata has been closed off, while media briefings of the party have also been suspended. Against this backdrop, the General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Ranjith Madduma Bandara said that the party will fulfill its social responsibility at this decisive time.
