UPDATE : Former Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga arrested by the CID

Colombo (News 1st) - Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga who was evading Sri Lankan authorities returned to the island this morning. He was arrested at the BIA by officers of the CID. According to airport sources, Weeratunga arrived in the country at 4.37am on board a Sri Lankan airlines flight from Muscat, Oman.
Upon his arrival, Weeratunga was arrested by the CID and is being interrogated. According to the Police Media Division, Weeratunga who was arrested by the CID at the BIA is to be produced before the Fort Magistrate's Court today Police Media Division.
The Former Ambassador to Russia is wanted by Sri Lankan Authorities for his unlawful interference in purchasing MiG Fighter Aircraft for the Sri Lanka Air Force from Ukraine. Udayanga Weeratunga was named a suspect in a case filed over the alleged embezzling of millions, through the deal.
On multiple occasions, the Colombo Fort Magistrate issued open warrants for the immediate arrest of former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga after considering facts presented by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation regarding the controversial deal which took place between 2007 and 2009.
Thereafter, he was arrested in the UAE following a INTERPOL RED NOTICE and was released for a considerable period in prison overseas.
