Colombo (News 1st): Did MP Ranjan Ramanayake really hand over the tapes in his possession? This was discussed at several instances in Parliament today. Deputy Speaker notified the House that he has not yet received the tapes that MP Ramanayake volunteered to hand over yesterday (Jan 22). Contrary to this MP Harsha De Silva said that he witnessed the handing over of said tapes.
Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri: The following are on announcements by Speaker. Although it was publicized in media that MP Ranjan Ramanayake handed over the tapes in his possession to the Secretary-General of the Parliament, as Hon. MP Ranjan Ramanayake informed the parliament on 21st January 2020, I would like to notify this House that such tapes have not yet been handed over to the Parliament. MP Harsha De Silva: Yesterday I told this House that MP Ranjan Ramanayake handed over 5 CDs that have 15,000 recorded phone conversations in them. However today the Deputy Speaker said that such CD's haven't been received by the Parliament. It was in my presence that MP Ranjan Ramanayake handed over those CDs. The CD's were given directly to the Secretary-General. A note was taken down when the tapes were handed over and MP Ranjan Ramanayake was asked to hand it over to the Hansard department. It was while in the process of handing them over, he received legal advice that there was no necessity to hand over the tapes. This is what happened. The media keeps on calling me and asking me if these tapes were handed over. They were given. A receipt was issued stating that the tapes were handed over to the Secretary-General. State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera: MP Harsha De Silva said that they were handed over right in front of his eyes. Does this mean it was not handed over? MP Thusitha Wijemanna: The Speaker has made a statement. Harsha De Silva made a statement of his own. State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera: I humbly request you to inform the Hon. Speaker. In his speech, he said he would table with evidence. If this is not evidence then I would like to request to inform the Speaker to remove the entire speech from the Hansard. MP Thenuka Vithanayake: They say that the tapes haven't been handed over. Is this also like the Volkswagon factory? We're building it today, we'll build it tomorrow. Will this actually happen?
