First lunar eclipse of 2020 to occur tomorrow

Colombo (News 1st): Prof. Chandana Jayaratne, the Director of Astronomy and Space Science Unit, Department of Physics, University of Colombo says the first lunar eclipse of the year will occur tomorrow night (January 10) when the shadow of the Earth falls on the Moon. According to a press release, the eclipse begins at 10.38 pm Sri Lanka standard time, with the moon entering the penumbra of the earth's shadow and ends up at 2.42 a.m. on the following morning. There are six eclipses this year;
  • 4 penumbral lunar eclipses
  • 01 annular solar eclipse
  • 01 total solar eclipse.
Prof Jayaratne says, only the annular solar eclipse on the 21st of June is clearly visible to Sri Lanka as a partial solar eclipse from 10.29 a.m. to 1.19 p.m.
