Four arrested for illegal sand mining

COLOMBO (News 1st):- Four people have been arrested for illegal sand mining in the Deduru Oya. The police says that they were arrested from the Sippigalana and Weerakumandaluwa areas of the Deduru Oya. Two boats and equipment used to excavate the sand were seized by the police. The suspects are due to be presented before the Chilaw Magistrates Court today (January 5). Meanwhile, a court order has also been issued prohibiting sand mining in the DeduruOya. However, our correspondent says that illegal mining takes place on a daily basis.
