University admission to be increased by 25%: Bandula Gunawardena

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Joint cabinet spokesperson, Minister Bandula Gunawardena noted that plans were drafted to increase the number of university admission by 25%(181 000 students) compared to the previous year. He added that 300 universities are planned to be constructed in the next 5 years representing every divisional secretariat for this purpose under the supervision of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He said this will be carried out by properly managing the material and human resources within the National University System. He went on to note, Cabinet had given the green light for the construction of Chartered Universities in the country. The Minister added that all government bodies which offer academic programs will be moved under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education by turning them to University Colleges. He added that they hope to open at least 100 colleges within the next year. Journalist: Does this measure also apply to private institutions that offer diplomas? Are they the institutions that are running at a loss? There are some institutions that lack standards. Minister Gunawardana added that it would apply to some private institutions and some institutions which have misused public funds.
