800 mobile phones in possession of inmates seized

Colombo (News 1st): Approximately 800 mobile phones were discovered in the possession of inmates held at prisons across the island so far this year. A senior officer at the Department of Prisons said a lion share of the haul was discovered from within the Magazine Prison. He went on to note, raids will continue at prisons to seized such illegal items. Sri Lanka Police said big-time drug traffickers are operating drug rings in Sri Lanka from within prison walls using social media applications via smartphones. Police said 10 such drug traffickers have already been identified and the respective authorities have been informed of this new development. According to Police, these traffickers are maintaining close contact with those in Pakistan and Dubai.
