Colombo (News 1st): State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeyawardena spoke about the 19th constitutional amendment. He noted that they must first lay the foundation for this during these 2 to 3 months and by the end of April or in May the general election should be announced.
He said the general public of the country should elect a stable government. He pointed out that there is instability in the country due to the 19th constitutional amendment. He said that 52.25% of the country has elected a president and that president, however, does not have the power to dissolve parliament.
The State Minister added that they are trapped inside the 19th amendment and it has created a situation where when the people of this country give their mandate, it cannot be used. Therefore, he stressed that they need a two-thirds majority to remove the negative aspects of the 19th amendment. He pointed out that for this, they need to secure a two-thirds majority in parliament.
