COLOMBO (News 1st)-The Department of Agrarian Development has warned farmers to remain vigilant during rains about the irrigation tanks which have reached the maximum capacity.
The Director of its Water Management Unit, Prabath Vitharana said, if the tanks are not watched closely, the bunds of the tanks will be at risk of breaching and flooding the area.
He said that in the past few days,38 tank bunds were breached and fell apart and flooded the area.
He further added that 65% of the 14,000 tanks under the purview of the Department of Agrarian Development have reached spill level.
