Colombo (News 1st): The fast unto death launched by the members of the SLPP against the dumping of garbage at Aruwakalu, Puttlam ended earlier today (December 9). The fast was brought to a close upon the promise of an opportunity to have a discussion with the Prime Minister. The fast unto death was organized by the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Saba member of the SLPP, Buddhika Gihan on Saturday (December 7). In support of the protest, the residents blocked the road during the early hours of today, obstructing the movement of the lorries transporting garbage from Colombo to Puttlam. Steps were taken to summon the Police and security forces in order to ensure security in the area. After conducting a discussion with the State Minister of Fisheries Sanath Nishantha who arrived at the location, the protesters decided to end their protest. Speaking to the media SLPP Member of the Wanathawilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha Buddika Gihan noted that State Minister Sanath Nishantha who came there promised that garbage would not be dumped there from tomorrow onward. He added that the State Minister said that he will intervene in this matter and provide a solution and promised that they will be given an opportunity to hold a discussion with the Prime Minister in this regard. When inquired by News 1st, the Colombo Municipal Commissioner Palitha Nanayakkara confirmed that the garbage was sent to the Aruwakkalu dumping site today as usual. He further stated that no problem with regard to the dumping of garbage has arisen so far.
