Colombo (News 1st): Speaking at a media briefing today (November 26) MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene noted that the SLPP is of the stance that leasing the Hambantota port for 99-years was a mistake made by the previous government. When questioned about the MCC agreement and Minister Wimal Weerawansa's statement that the MCC agreement would not be signed MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene stated that "it could be a government policy" and that they could not comment on it. MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa addressing the matter stated that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's foreign policy clearly states that Sri Lanka would remain neutral and stay out of conflicts between nations. The MP added that the President has made a clear statement that he would not enter into any agreements which would be detrimental to the country. However, the UPFA MP stated that they could not make a clear statement on the matter. When questioned whether Minister Wimal Weerawansa's statement was a personal one, MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene stated that there are parts of Minister Weerawasa's statement that they all agree with, however, he noted that the agreement should be brought into parliament so that the general public can be aware of what it is.
