Central Bank Governor Dr. Indrajit Coomeraswamy to resign

COLOMBO(News 1st) - Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Indrajit Coomeraswamy has tendered his resignation and will step down from his post, with effect from December 20th this year. Speaking to News 1st, Governor Coomaraswamy said that he submitted his resignation earlier this month and plans to leave his post in December. He added, the decision was due to personal reasons and not related to recent political changes following the recent election. The governor will chair his final monetary policy decision on November 29th. Dr Coomaraswamy was appointed Governor in July 2016, replacing Arjuna Mahendran whose tenure was mired by allegations of corruption. The Global Capital Markets publication in October 2017 named Coomaraswamy as the Central Bank Governor of the Year in South Asia. In August this year, Dr Indrajit Coomaraswamy was conferred the title of “Deshamanya” by former President Maithripala Sirisena.
