COLOMBO (News 1st) – Sajith Premadasa arrived at the election operation centre of the New Democratic Front in Vauxhall Street and met with the people.
A number of people present took the opportunity to express their support.
Chairman of the Weligama Municipal Council, Rehan Jayawickreme shared his thoughts regarding the leadership of the UNP and its history to the media at the scene.
“In 1999, the Prime Minister lost. He lost in 2005 as well. In 2010, he fielded Sarath Fonseka as the presidential candidate but lost that as well.
Finally, in 2015, they tried to escape from defeat and fielded Maithripala Sirisena to contest. He served as the leader of the party for 25 years. In my view, that is enough.
At least now, he must hand over the leadership to Sajith Premadasa. If Sajith Premadasa forms a new party, we will not hesitate to join him. Even if they chase us from the UNP, we don’t care.
The UNP headquarters is no longer at Sirikotha. It’s now based in Vauxhall Street. It was in August when the SLPP announced Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be their presidential candidate.
But Sajith Premadasa was declared the presidential candidate, only during the first week of October. This is like a 400-meter race, and Sajith joined the race once the opponents had completed 300 meters.
We will join Sajith Premadasa and support whatever the decision he takes. We urge the leader to stop this immediately. If you don’t stop, we will surround Sirikotha. How can you protect another person’s house, when you can’t protect your own?
This proves their so-called, five-star, democracy. It’s better if he goes to a country like Libya, and preach democracy. The people of Libya know more about democracy than you.”
