Colombo (News 1st): Attorney-at-law Shiral Lakthilaka addressing a media briefing today weighed in on the issues surrounding the citizenship of Presidential Candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Lakthilaka noted that if the application to renounce the US citizenship was accepted on the 3rd of May, as proclaimed by Ali Sabri PC, Gotabaya Rajapaksa's name should have appeared on the federal register that was released in November. He noted that based on this one can come to the conclusion that Gotabaya Rajapaksa remains a US citizen. He went onto note that in line with the 501st section of the American Nationalities Act, the document shown by the GR camp signifies the start of the renunciation procedure and not its conclusion. He noted that once this citizen makes a request, it is accepted by the State Department and thereafter the State Department should notify other relevant institutions. Lakthilaka went onto state that a key institution that should be notified in this process is the Department of Justice. He said the Department of Justice would then asses if he has any issues against him and notify the State Department. According to Lakthilaka after this process is complete the consular officer will be notified and a seal which reads "canceled" will be placed. Further, he noted that Gotabaya Rajapaksa will not be given Sri Lankan citizenship the minute he renounces American citizenship. He pointed out that according to Sri Lankan law, he should make a request to the Controller General of the Department of Immigration and Emigration. He questioned; "Have they published any such document?"
