Colombo (News 1st): Rainfall is predicted across a number of areas today (September 28). The Meteorological Department forecasts 100mm showers or thundershowers at times in the Eastern and Uva provinces and in Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere in the evening or night and fairly heavy falls of between 50-75 mm are likely at some places. However, in some good news, several spells of showers are expected in the Jaffna, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts as well. These areas generally experience arid weather. The Disaster Management Centre says over 40,000 people have been affected by the inclement weather. Assistant Director Pradeep Kodipilli said 8 districts including Colombo, Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Gampaha have been affected. He added that relief efforts will continue. Meanwhile, a Disaster Management official said 65 houses have been damaged by strong winds experienced in the Ratnapura area last afternoon.
