Colombo (News 1st): Former General Secretary of the United National Party Tissa Attanayake convening a media briefing today (September 27) noted that as a general secretary of the party who toiled for over a decade, he has decided that Sajith Premadasa is the most suitable person for this journey. He noted that thereby he has accepted the invitation extended by him, and will work to the best of his ability to ensure the victory of Sajith Premadasa. He added that he would act as a bridge to gather the people who have distanced themselves from the party due to previous political squabbles.

When questioned if he is ready to reach out to certain people like Dayasiri Jayasekera who left the party, he noted that he will not mention names specifically, but the United National Party had a strong youth front. He noted that due to some reasons this front grew apart from the party and Sajith Premadasa can act as a bridge to bring them back to the party and unite everyone.

Journalists also questioned if discussions are being held with members of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. Responding to this he noted that many people hoped for Sajith Premadasa to come forward and certain Parliamentarians directly spoke with Sajith Premadasa regarding this. He noted that he held discussions with some of them  and they were waiting until the issues surrounding the nomination were sorted out. He noted that since the issue has been resolved, there will be a decisive turn of events in the coming 5 to 6 weeks.

When questioned about SLFP not naming their candidate, he noted that some people have told him personally that it is hard for them to stand with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna with the issues that have cropped up regarding the presidential candidate of the SLPP. He noted that therefore some of them are holding discussions to support Sajith Premadasa.
