Non-academic staff strike enters day 3

Colombo (News 1st): The strike action by non-academic staff at state universities citing several demands including a solution to salary anomalies entered day three. The strike action by non-academic staff at state universities has posed a direct impact on the educational activities at universities. News 1st correspondent reported the strike affected the activities at the Karapitiya Faculty of Medicine as well. A special meeting took place today (September 12) at the premises of the University of Peradeniya with the participation of a large number of non-academic staff. The meeting was on the future measures of their trade union action. The Students Union of the University of Peradeniya decided to support the Non-Academic Staff Strike starting today. Chairperson of the Student's Union of the Peradeniya University Lakshan Chanaka noted that academic activities of all universities have been affected for many days. They urged the government to provide a solution for the non-academic staff who are engaged in the strike action to win their rights. He added that as the Student's Union they will provide their fullest support for the non-academic staff's cause. Trade Unions pointed out, the authorities failed to provide a solution to these issues. Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee Dhammika S. Priyantha noted that the long term strike action launched by all university trade unions continues. He said day to day activities including, lectures, examinations, and research activities have come to a standstill at all universities. He added that until a proper solution is provided none of the universities will be able open and the students' academic activities and exams will come to a standstill.
