COLOMBO (News 1st):- Speaking on a recent incident that occurred on July 30th, where a group of US nationals had refused to hand over their luggage for inspection at a hotel in Colombo, MP Wimal Weerawansa says that after this incident was exposed that the US Embassy in Colombo had issued a statement admitting to the incident. He further said that the statement notes there was a misunderstanding while also saying that however, they have not yet revealed the contents of those bags since they weren't allowed to be screened. Leader of the National Freedom Front, Wimal Weerawansa says that there definitely is something behind this incident while also highlighting the fact that Sri Lanka is not a country where anyone could act as they please. Weerawansa repeatedly noted that the US Embassy should reveal details on what was concealed in those bags and should not evade the issue while also claiming that it is even more of a surprise that the government is yet to make an official statement even after this recent revelation. He states that there is indeed no need of agreements like the SOFA since the Americans are already entering the country in their own planes and acting as they please by not even allowing their luggage to be screened. Weerawansa says that if by any chance the personnel at the Hilton hotel had allowed them to pass through security without screening the luggage that this matter would have not have come to the surface. Wimal Weerawansa also says that according to information received that this group was in the country for almost two weeks. The parliamentarian questions why they were here, the contents of their unconcealed baggage and to whom it was handed over to. He stresses that this could be an effect on the national security of the country while also adding that the present government is one which failed to secure the security of the state. https://youtu.be/x0cPkDJMbJg
