COLOMBO (News1 st):- The presidential election, is a topic currently dominating the political arena in Sri Lanka. But when will the presidential election be held? According to the Presidential Elections Act No. 15 of 1981, the Elections Commission is vested with the power to hold the presidential elections as per the constitution of the country. This will take place during a period not less than one month and not more than two months before the end of the official term of the president or at a time when the president has expressed his intentions on holding the presidential election. Thereby the time period of not more than two months before the end of the official term of the president lapses on November 9th. The Presidential Elections (Amendment) Act No. 16 of 1988 states that, the Chairman of the Elections Commission shall by order published in the Gazette to fix the date of nomination of candidates being a date not “less than sixteen days and not more than twenty-one days” from the date of publication of such order, and the place of nomination. This amended act goes on to note that the Chairman of the Elections Commission shall by order published in the Gazette fix the date on which the poll shall be taken, being a date “not less than four weeks and not more than six weeks." Thereby the Chairman of the Elections Commission will be vested with the power to call for the presidential election by the end of this month. Commenting on this matter, the Executive Director of the PAFFERAL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that the elections should be held between November 9th and December 9th since all elections that were held in the country ever since 1981 have been held during the minimum time frame which is 46 days. He further said that the date on which the elections is to be held will be decided by the Elections Commission, which will most likely be a date between the 20th and the 30th of November since there is a need to hold the presidential elections prior to the G.C.E. Ordinary level examinations.   https://youtu.be/A8Df5H1YhYA
