COLOMBO (News 1st) - A media briefing on the upcoming election was held at the Elections Commission today(July 22). Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya noted that the Presidential election must be held after November 9th and before December 9th this year. He noted that the elections cannot be held on  November 10th and December 8th because they are Sundays. He added that therefore the closest day that the commission can hold the election is either on November 15th and December 7th. He added that the Elections Commission has informed the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the leaders of parties and the Opposition leader that the election can be held on those two days or any other day. He added that if a court order demands the provincial council elections could be held before the presidential elections. Mahinda Deshapriya shared that the presidential candidate nominations should be submitted between September 20th and October 20th. But he added that it was more important to frett over the electoral list since if someone's name is not in the register they do not have the right to vote.  He added that even if they certify the list by October 31st we must grant another 21 days for the names of the internally displaced to be included in the supplementary list. He added that if the process is not concluded in the given time they will have to use the 2018 electoral list for the upcoming presidential election.
