COLOMBO (News 1st): The pilot project organized by the Colombo Municipal Council and the Netherlands Embassy, to create a car-free zone was launched this morning (July 14). The launch of the Car-free zone was conducted in the area surrounding Independence Square.
The event saw the participation of the Mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake, and the Netherland’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka Joanne Doornewaard.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Rosy Senanayake said that it is noteworthy how especially on a Sunday the roads are free of cars and provided to the public to enjoy the day. She added that at the beginning of the initiative that this project will be initiated on one Sunday of every month and that if it turns out to be a success that it will continue every Sunday.
