COLOMBO (News 1st): The first high zone of Agriculture Production Planning commenced in Udayapura, Uhana today (July 7). The event was held under the auspices of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister stated that the large number of farmers gathered at the event is the reason why the agriculture industry keeps moving forward but of which they do not possess the ownership. The Prime Minister further said that this was the reason that the Land Special Provisions bill was tabled with the approval of the parliament and later was approved and gazetted. He claimed that now people are going to courts to stop this bill which is not an issue. The Prime Minister added that everyone should take to the streets in support of this bill and that the matter cannot be dropped without a fight.

Ministers Daya Gamage, Gayantha Karunathilake and several other Ministers and MPs were among those who attended the event. The group attended the event to distribute Land deeds held in line with the national program to distribute a million of land deeds.

Meanwhile, speaking on the same matter on a separate occasion, the leader of the opposition Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the present government is only trying to bring in various bills and pass them in haste while the President of the country says that he will not allow it. He continued to say that he is fully aware that this is a minor matter where the President only needs to tell the secretary of lands to cancel this bill with a mere gazette even without any consultation from the cabinet.
