Special operation to arrest drivers under influence

Colombo (News 1st): Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that the police Headquarters decided to launch a special operation for a month starting July 5th to arrest drivers driving under the influence in a bid reduce motor accidents. He added that Police officers who arrest a drunk driver carrying passengers will receive an award of Rs. 5000 and an award of Rs. 2500 will be paid to police officers who arrest drivers under the influence of alcohol. SP Gunasekara said if a driver is charged, he will have to face a fine of up to Rs. 25,000. He went onto note that the Police headquarters will also bring down equipment to test for other narcotic substances in drivers.
