Fire destroys 200 acres of Wellawaya forest reserve

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A fire broke out last evening, at the Wellawaya forest reserve in Niviththagala.
Over 200 acres of forest were destroyed and several invaluable herbs including Burutha, Halmilla, Sudu Kaluwara and Mora went up in flames.
Over 100 army personnel led by a Major were deployed last evening to douse the fire upon the request of the Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Unit of Monaragala.
The Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Unit, Ravindra Kumar noted that following the attempt to douse the fire all night, the army personnel managed to succeed in the morning.
The Assistant Director requested the general public to be vigilant on future fires and to notify the nearest police station if a fire breaks out.
වැල්ලවාය නිවිත්තාගල කඳු රක්ෂිතයේ ඊයේ පස්වරුවේ ගින්නක් හට ගත්තා ගින්නෙන් අක්කර 200කට අධික ප්‍රමාණයක් විනාශ වී තිබෙනවා. අප වාර්තාකරු පැවසුවේ මෙහිදී වටිනා ඖෂධ රැසක් මෙන්ම බුරුත, හල්මිල්ල, සුදු කළුවර, මොර ආදී වටිනා ශාක වර්ග රැසක් විනාශ වී ඇති බවයි. ඊයේ රාත්‍රියේ මොණරාගල ආපදා කළමණාකරණ ඒකකයේ සහකාර අධ්‍යක්ෂවරයාට දැනුම්දීමෙන් අනතුරුව ඔහුගේ ඉල්ලීම පිරිදි යුධ හමුදාවේ 100 කට අධික බට පිරිසක් මේජර්වරයෙකුගේ නායකත්වයෙන් ඊයේ රාත්‍රියේ සිට ගිනි නිවීමේ කටයුතු වල නිරත වුණා. අද අළුයම වන විට ඔවුන් සාර්ථකව ගින්න නිවාදැමීමට සමත් වූ බව ආපදා කළමණාකරණ ඒකකයේ සහකාර අධ්‍යක්ෂ, රවින්ද්‍ර කුමාර මහතා පැවසුවා. මෙම ප්‍රදේශයේ පවතින නියං සහ සුළං තත්වය නිසා ගින්න නිවීමට අසීරු වූ බවත් සඳහන්. ආපදා කළමණාකරණ ඒකකයේ සහකාර අධ්‍යක්ෂ, රවින්ද්‍ර කුමාර මහතා පවසා ඇත්තේ මේ දිනවල මෙවැනි ගිනිතැබීම් වාර්තා වන බවත්, එවැනි තොරතුරක් දුටුවහොත් ළඟම ඇති පොලිසියට දැනුම්දෙන ලෙසත් ඔහු ඉල්ලා සිටිනවා.
