Tense situation over the construction of crematorium in Weligama

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A tense situation arose in Weligama yesterday (June 10) due to the proposed construction of a crematorium in the area. The Weligama Pradeshiya Saba had made arrangements to construct a crematorium in Warakapitiya. However, due to strong local opposition against this move, representatives of the council, authorities and locals had convened a meeting to discuss the matter yesterday (June 10). It was reported that residents of the area were against the crematorium due to obstruction it poses to their day to day lives. The residents noted that the allocated plot of land for the crematorium would harm the water supply of the land adjacent to it. News 1st team checked with the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Saba for his point of view. Pushpakumara Battage, Chairman of Weligama Pradeshiya Saba noted that the construction of the crematorium commenced in 2014 and the project was launched taking everything into consideration, including nature. He added that it was a public service and is a project under the Pura Naguma Project. According to him, it was the most suitable land to construct a crematorium and Rs 67.4mn was allocated for the project.
