COLOMBO (News 1st): Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya commented on the dates of the upcoming Presidential elections.

He said that the provincial elections are due to be held the first. Also speaking on the recent statement made by President Maithripala Sirisena in India on the elections to be held on the 7th of December, Deshapriya said that the presidential elections are due to be held one month prior, but not exceeding two months to the date on which the Presidents five-year official term ends.

He continued to say that due to this matter that the elections are due to be held between the 9th of November and the 9th of December this year, further claiming that due to this the earliest possible date will be on the 15th of November while the latest will be the 7th of December. The Elections Commissioner added that taking all these matters into consideration they will decide on a date appropriate for elections from between these two dates, assuming the President does not call for an election beforehand.

He spoke on the matter during the commencement of the Colombo district-level program in Moratuwa today (June 01), to collect applications for the revision of the electoral register of 2019.
