Colombo (News1st) - Acting IGP C.D. Wickramaratne issuing a special message on the current situation on the country, gave a stern warning to those inciting violence. The IGP noted that curfew was imposed in the Kuliyapitiya area after groups of drunk persons attacked several shops in the area. Wickramaratne noted that curfew was imposed with the hope of bringing the situation under control. However since a number of incidents were reported from Kuliyapitiya once again today, the IGP stated that a decision was reached to impose an islandwide curfew as a precautionary measure. IGP Wickramaratne noted that the Police has acted with patience so far but added that the extremists and individuals inciting violence should not mistake their patience for a weakness. While explaining that a majority of the country have supported them in their efforts following the April attacks, there remains a small group of extremists who continue to incite violence. The IGP reiterated that they would not allow these individuals to hold the lives of innocents hostage and take the country down a path of destruction. He added that persons arrested in connection to such acts will not receive bail and will be forced to face prison terms of up to 10 years.
