Illegal gem mining: Two arrested in Hatton

COLOMBO (News 1st): Two suspects were arrested by the Hatton division Bribery and Corruption prevention unit over illegal gem mining in the Keselgamu Oya. The prospectors were apprehended following a joint search operation conducted by the Police and the Army. The area residents complained that gem mining was carried out in a manner that damaged the environment near Tillyrie Estate close to the Keselgamu Oya. The police also seized equipment that was used for the purpose. The arrested individuals were identified as residents of Bogawantalawa and they are due to be presented before the Hatton Magistrates Court today (May 10).
