COLOMBO (News 1st) - Notorious underworld leader and drug kingpin Makandure Madush who was deported to Sri Lanka has been taken into custody by the Criminal Investigations Department for further investigations. He was taken into CID custody at around 5 am at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.
Makandure Madush and several others were arrested on February 5th at a hotel in Dubai for the possession of drugs.
Makandure Madush has been accused of committing several murders including the murder of former Southern Provincial Council Minister Danny Hitthatiya, drug trafficking, as well as charges of robbery and maintaining close ties with the LTTE.
Additionally, Makandure Madush is accused of murdering seven individuals including underworld gang leader Samayan, by ambushing and gunning down prisoners in a prison bus in Kalutara. Against such a backdrop, Makandure Madush who fled the country and lived a luxurious life in Dubai was arrested on February 5th this year, along with a number of his few accomplices, while celebrating his child's birthday, at a hotel in Dubai.
A total of 30 apprehended suspects have been deported to Sri Lanka in the past few months. Among the deported was "Kanjipani Imran", who is accused of committing several crimes and a close associate of "Makandure Madush". Police stated that "Kanjipani Imran" is currently being questioned under detention orders, by the Colombo Crimes Division.
Despite Madush's petition against his deportation to Sri Lanka, the Dubai courts decided to extradite Madush to Sri Lanka.
