Colombo (News 1st): Non-Cabinet Minister of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology Ajith P. Perera convening a media briefing at the ministry today (April 11) noted that MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said with confidence that he expects the president to calculate his 5-year term correctly. He noted that the UNP does not have a problem with this and are simply asking a question. He noted that according to the current constitution the term of the current president ends on January 8, 2020. He went onto note that if the President has a doubt about it, he can clear it up by going to the Supreme Court. He said when the next presidential election is announced they will be able to see major changes. Journalists then raised a question, "in a Facebook poll that you (Ajith P. Perera) did, 74 % people had voted for Deputy Leader of the UNP Sajith Premadasa to be the presidential candidate, but only 26% had voted in favour of Ranil Wickremesinghe." Ajith Perera noted that the decisions they take as a party are based on the input of experts, personal knowledge and the opinion of the general public. He said these polls are a method of taking into account the views and opinions of the general public. When questioned how these results were considered, he said he cannot reveal anything regarding it. He noted that they can't do anything beyond conducting polls for the General Public. Perera noted that it is an independent process that is decided by the opinion of the General Public and Facebook is only a tool that is used to collect this data.
