COLOMBO (News 1st) – A fire broke out at the Sundarapola garbage dump in Kurunegala.
The fire was contained following joint efforts by the Kurunegala Municipal Fire Department and Police.
The locals state that although the intensity of the fire has decreased, smoke continues to emanate from the dump.
It was reported as a precautionary measure, pregnant mothers, children and elderly citizens living within 500m of the garbage dump have been moved.
The locals state the Municipal Council is reasonable for the current crisis.
The News 1st inquired Mayor Thushara Sanjeewa regarding the matter and he stated the responsible parties have been notified and as of now, 90% of the fire has been contained.
