COLOMBO (News 1st): The recent power outages across Sri Lanka was a hot topic in the Parliament today (March 23).
MP Kanchana Wijesekera raised the matter, referring to a newspaper article which had reported that the CEB will have unannounced power cuts.
“At least if they announce the time that power will be disconnected, the people can be prepared for it. These power cuts will not affect Colombo 7, but other areas will definitely be affected.” said the Parliamentarian.
UPFA Parliamentarian Kanchana Wijesekera questioned in parliament today regarding the power outages experienced in several parts of the country during the past few days.
During an event, this morning, Minister of Power and Energy Ravi Karunanayake responded to these allegations – saying that there has been a “sudden breakdown” in the Norochcholai Power Plant.
The Minister pointed out that the power cuts are caused by a 15% increase in the demand due to the prevailing heat. ” The demand exceeds the supply,” he added.
“Within the next ten days, we will address these issues, and restore everything to its previous state.” – said the Minister.
When questioned if these power cuts are a result of an “obstruction”, the Minister disregarded the claim.
“I believe everyone works in favor of us, It’s only been 65 days since I took over. During this time period, we managed to establish 2 LNG Power plants. During this short period, the generation of 194 megawatts using Wind force; LTL solar systems have also been approved.” said Min. Karunanayake.
Minister Ravi Karunanayake also stated that the announcement on upcoming power cuts will be made on Monday (March 25).
Ravi Karunanayaka – Yes we have requested for this. Actually, no one is to be blamed here, we will come to a final decision and make an announcement on Monday.
The Public Utilities Commission informed News 1st that the consumer ‘must be given prior notice’ during planned power cuts, with the exception of regular maintenance activities and emergency breakdowns.
The Commission also stated that the CEB must inform the PUCSL, before informing the consumer. “Failing to do so is a violation of the conditions stated in the CEB’s power generation license,” The Commission told News 1st.
