"New laws being drafted to strengthen the Police" - President

Colombo (News 1st): The closing ceremony of “Rata Wenuwen Ekata Sitimu” or Stand Together For the Country program was held in the Puttalam today (March 22). The event was held under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena. The main objective of the programme is to provide people with the best public service and other benefits. A communique issued by the President's media division stated that the programme will resolve issues in the fields of Education, Health, and Employment. The programme which is a concept of the President will be implemented in other districts of the island. Speaking at the event UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara requested the President to implement a programme under one of his (President's) concepts calling it Puttlam Navodaya or Pubudamu Puttalam or any programme to collectively develop the Puttalam District. Responding to this request President Sirisena noted that he agrees with MP Bandara with Puttalam district needing a special development project. He stressed the importance of development programs in districts to the government. The President noted that there are no cabinet ministers for the Puttalam District and a district without a cabinet minister is helpless. He pointed out that there are a few districts like this. Speaking regarding the Police during the event he noted that it has only been 3 months since he took over the police and the activities of the police have become effective. He added that the Police officers from top to bottom have become more enthusiastic. President went onto note that he has given priority to the grievances of the police and have amended the law required to strengthen the police service. He added that new laws are also being drafted. He noted that the Police officers are being blamed by everyone, and they face numerous issues. He went onto note that when they (Police) go to nab drug peddlers and underworld gang members they risk their lives, therefore, the public must look at the police service in a positive perspective. The President also declared open the new municipal council auditorium, and the Smart Sri Lanka computer unit of the Puttalam district.
