COLOMBO (News 1st) - The ultimate home for most Sri Lankan's who try to migrate and seek refuge in Australia is the Manus island adjacent to Australia.
It is reported that a group of Sri Lankans have been trapped in Manus for over six years.
The false promises of money and luxury lives by human traffickers has led to these unfortunate circumstances. Manus island is a far cry from the luxuries they expected to experience in Australia.
Several Sri Lankans among them have committed suicide over the six years that they have been held in custody. They reiterate that they have no idea what the future holds for them.
A person on the island noted that they don't have enough facilities including medical care. He added that already twelve captives had committed suicide and seven others had died due to illnesses.
Recent reports noted that following the tightening of the immigration laws of Australia human traffickers have now diverted their attention to other areas like Reunion island.
