Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thero commemorated

Colombo (News 1st): The commemoration ceremony of Wariyapola Sri Sumanagala Thero took place at the statue of the thero at the premises of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy today (March 2). Wariyapola Sri Sumanagala Thero stood against hoisting the British flag before the Kandyan Convention was signed. He took down the British flag and re-hoisted the Lion Flag. It is considered a remarkably brave and patriotic act by the thero that was done on March 2nd,1885. Today's event was graced by the Chief Incumbent of the Asgiri Chapter Venerable Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thero. Speaking at the event the Anunayake of the Asgiri Chapter Venerable Anamaduwe Dhamamdhassi Thero noted that at present there are several attempts to draft a new constitution. He said the Maha Sanga has stated several times that the country does not require a new constitution. He noted that they need to consider whether state leaders pay any attention. Thereafter, the Governor of the Central Province Maithri Gunaratne expressing his views and noted that at present state leaders act according to some unknown diaspora. He said they cannot permit such actions as they have been betrayed enough. Gunaratne noted that the powers vested in the President has been reduced and the President has sacrificed the maximum possible. He noted that it is one political party that is trying to achieve this and to strengthen another political party in the north. He went onto to note that it is this political party from the north that is attempting to control the government, however, this party has not served the people of the north in any way.
