COLOMBO (News 1st) - Imports have become a threat to local small industries all over the country. It is a well-known fact that a large number of metal products are imported regularly as it is convenient and easily marketable. Yet no one considers the negative impact of this practice on local small industries. Bowathanna Watta in Naula is a village of traditional blacksmiths. Their livelihood is the production of metal products mainly used for cultivation and regular household purposes. Although they have the potential to supply the market with authentic steel tools, unfortunately, importation has a toll on their industry and market.
