John Amaratunga celebrates 40 glorious years of political life

Colombo (News 1st): An event was held last evening (Feb 27) to celebrate the 40-year political career of the Minister of Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs, John Amaratunga. The event was held at the BMICH, Colombo under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena. Dignitaries including President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, government and opposition MPs, and religious leaders graced the occasion. Speaking at the event President Maithripla Sirisena noted that John Amaratunga is an individual who has won over many people. He noted that when it comes to the political field, he has fulfilled everything. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe making a few remarks on John Amaratunga noted that he worked with principles and the UNP is a party with principles. This is the reason that the party is protected. He said whether it is their party or another party, he hopes that Amaratunga will be taken as an example. The President and Prime Minister also presented tokens of appreciation to Minister John Amaratunga. Minister Amaratunga noted that he is satisfied that he has fulfilled his duty. He noted that he worked under 5 Presidents and even today this country is yet to get another leader like President J.R. Jayewardena as he was a unique and excellent President. John Amaratunga noted that the country is still enjoying the benefits of Jayawardene's actions. He pointed out that his main task is being close to the people. Minister Amaratunga said when he started in politics they had true party politics and there was a leader and there was limitless faith in the leader, no MP or party supporter ever went against that leadership. Amaratunga said in modern politics, they have a party constitution and they are working in line with that and the major challenge they as a party are facing now is winning the next Presidential election.
