Army Captain and Corporal arrested on bribery charges

Colombo (News 1st) - Two individuals including an officer attached to the Army Camp in Weerawila were arrested by the Police STF when attempting to solicit a bribe of Rs 500,000 in the Uva Kuda-oya area in Thanamanvila. According to the Police STF the two suspects had attempted to solicit bribes from several sand mining businessmen in the area. One person was arrested while accepting the bribe. The arrested suspects have been identified as an Army Captain and a Corporal attached to the Weeravila camp. They are currently in the custody of the Kuda-oya police. A firearm, 16 rounds of T56 ammunition, a hand grenade as well as several army uniforms were also taken into custody at the residence of the Army Corporal. Army media spokesperson Brigadier Sumith Attapattu noted that the duo have been suspended and that further investigations are currently underway.
