President takes on drug mafia

The war against drugs in Sri Lanka took a sharp turn in the right direction recently with the countries Chief Executive, President Sirisena, openly declaring his intention of taking down the drug mafia. In 'Duterte' - style remarks he made it clear that he would show no mercy and advocated the death penalty for offenders. Since then, several leading underworld figures have been arrested, including the infamous 'Madhush', who was picked up in a movie-like raid in Dubai. The arrest followed a series of gruesome murders in what appeared to be a turf war between gangs running the drug trade in various parts of the island. Large hauls of narcotics are detected and raided on almost a daily basis with this morning's haul being the largest ever.
