Colombo (News1st) – The largest haul of heroin discovered in Sri Lanka was taken into police custody earlier today from the Colppetty area.

A total of 294kg and 490g of heroin was taken into police custody at a car park in a shopping mall in the area, in a joint raid conducted by the Police Narcotics unit together with the Police STF.

Two suspects aged 43 and 32, both residents of Keselwatte Panadura, have been taken into Police custody.

While the street value is still being estimated, experts put it to several billion rupees.

President takes on drug mafia

The war against drugs in Sri Lanka took a sharp turn in the right direction recently with the countries Chief Executive, President Sirisena, openly declaring his intention of taking down the drug mafia.

In ‘Duterte’ – style remarks he made it clear that he would show no mercy and advocated the death penalty for offenders.

Since then, several leading underworld figures have been arrested, including the infamous ‘Madhush’, who was picked up in a movie-like raid in Dubai.

The arrest followed a series of gruesome murders in what appeared to be a turf war between gangs running the drug trade in various parts of the island.

Large hauls of narcotics are detected and raided on almost a daily basis with this morning’s haul being the largest ever.
