Rathgama businessmen murder: Police Commission summons report

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The National Police Commission states that a report has been summoned on the murder of the two businessmen in Rathgama. A spokesperson for the commission noted that the report requires information on police officers been allegedly involved in the incident. Inspector of the Southern Province Special Investigations Unit Kapila Nishantha de Silva is currently in remand custody over the incident.  Meanwhile, the Galle Magistrates Court ordered that the Sub Inspector of the Southern Province Special Investigations Unit Viraj Madushanka who was arrested on the 21st of this month to be detained and interrogated for 48 hours. Investigations revealed that the two businessmen who were abducted in Rathgama were murdered in a house in Gonamulla, Akmeemana. The bodies were discovered burnt in the Madagangoda forest reserve in Walasmulla. On the 23rd of last month, Manjula Asela and Rasheen Chinthaka (two businessmen) were abducted by a group of unidentified people. The relatives of the duo had constantly charged that a group of people who were armed and clad in uniforms similar to the police had made the abduction. The relatives further say that on February 5th the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Galle, Sathish Gamage had sent them a letter stating that the two businessmen were in their department's custody. However, the same ASP had denied sending such a letter on the 14th of this month. Meanwhile, the Senior DIG of the Southern province Ravi Wijegunawardene has also been transferred to the police headquarters on a temporary basis.
