Presidential Commission to start corruption investigations with Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Presidential Commission of Inquiry to Investigate into the Acts of Corruption and Fraud alleged to have been committed at state institutions from January 2015 to December 2018 states that two complaints among the many received have been selected for the 1st phase of investigations. One of the selected charges are regarding corruption and irregularities carried out at the Sri Jayawardenapura hospital while the other, is a complaint lodged with regard to the purchase of electricity by the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, to increase the voltage. The Commission noted the two complaints have been lodged by the Organisation to Protect Public Property and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka. Members of the Commission held comprehensive discussions in this regard yesterday(February 14) evening and accordingly, investigations are due to commence soon. It is mentioned that the Commission also requested the IGP for a team of police personnel and CID operatives who are skilled in financial crimes to support the investigations. Additionally, a Special Investigations Unit led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police is to be formed. The commission will commence recording evidence into these complaints, on February 28th. It has received forty-nine complaints as of present, and complaints can be lodged until March 7th.
