Record number of drug dealers arrested this year

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Over 10,300 suspects have been arrested in relation to narcotics during the first 42 days of the year 2019. Police said that over 1310kg of narcotics had been seized from the suspects. 5222 suspects were arrested with over 224kgs of Heroin between the 1st of Jan and 12th of Feb. 5146 suspects were arrested during the same time period with over 1024kg of Kerala Ganja. Police said that of those arrested at least twenty-five persons were leading underworld figures. Investigations also revealed that these underworld figures have conducted their drug operations for a long time in Sri Lanka. Additionally, nine foreign suspects from Afghanistan, India, America and Italy involved with narcotics were arrested within the year 2019. Last year (2018) forty-two foreign suspects with narcotics were arrested. Police stated that narcotics are smuggled to Sri Lanka mainly from Pakistan and Afghanistan using sea routes. Police added that they have taken additional security measures to bring drug trafficking under control.
