Colombo (News1st): The report compiled by the committee appointed to investigate the officials who assaulted prisoners of the Agunukolapelessa prison has been handed over to the subject minister.
Prisons Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya appointed a three-member committee to look into the incident.
Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms stated that the report was compiled after recording statements from over 40 officers and inmates. The report notes that the police will conduct an investigation into the CCTV footage of the incident. The report also recommends that those who were involved in the attack should be punished under an institutional procedure.
Meanwhile, the second committee appointed by the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms has begun their investigations. That report is due to be handed over to the Minister within the next week. The second committee comprises of officials from the Presidential Secretariat, the Public Administration Ministry, and the Prisons Ministry.
