COLOMBO (News 1st) – A special task force comprising of officials of the Police Anti-Narcotics Bureau, the Sri Lankan Navy and the Police STF has been appointed to crack down on drug trafficking near the coastal areas.
According to the police, nearly 500kg of the 730kg of drugs busted within 2018 were from coastal areas. The Police noted that these drugs had originated from countries such as Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan.
While 10 fishermen were arrested within the last year over drug trafficking the Police notes that a large number of fishermen are connected to the drug smuggling trade.
