Four years in prison for Rs 5000 bribe

COLOMBO (News 1st) - A police sergeant who was charged for obtaining a bribe of Rs. 5000 was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment today (January 10). The order was given when the case was taken up before the Colombo High Court judge Vikum Kaluarachchi. It was on the 26th of June 2011 that the Bribery commission lodged a complaint against this sergeant who was then attached to the Gokaralla police. The bribe was allegedly taken from a suspect in custody in order to refrain from carrying out legal action. In addition to this sentence of four years, the police sergeant was also fined with Rs. 12,000.
