Colombo (News1st): United People's Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma made a revelation about an attempt made to increase the number of ministerial portfolios. He noted that there was a huge fight in the name of democracy and the constitution and they said that they achieved victory. He added that they are struggling to distribute the ministerial portfolios and increase the number of cabinet positions. MP Alahapperuma stated that they got 117 MPs to raise their hands in parliament by promising the Tamil National Alliance the position of the opposition leader. He added that Section 46 of the constitution clearly says that the number of cabinet ministers should not exceed 30 and the way to exceed the limit is by forming a national government. He went onto note that Section 45 subsection 5 of the constitution defines what a national government is, it says "where the recognized political party or the independent group which obtains the highest number of seats in Parliament forms a National Government." The Parliamentarian noted that there is one MP who represents the Muslim Congress and the United National Party has joined hands with that one MP to form a government and calls it a national government. He added that they are trying to do this so they can increase the number of cabinet ministers by 20.
